Provenanced Native Plants for Restoration and Landscaping

Pinecrest and Green Valley Farm in Sonoma County are now growing redwoods, oaks, and other native plants for restoration projects and retail nurseries. Indiscriminate use of “native” seed mixes and plant stock can permanently undo millions of years of local adaptation in just a few years through the process of hybridization and introgression. Using hyper-local genotypes for restoration and landscaping is good for the environment and the local economy, and costs less than maintaining and replacing poorly adapted horticultural varieties.
